This month we have started our second unit: Exploring Liquids. We have completed a few experiments to date:
~ Discovering surface tension of water using a full glass of water and MANY pennies
~ With a partner, students completed "Penny magic" which involved students trying to see how many drops of water a penny will hold.
~ Exploring various liquids to determine its color and movement. (We viewed water, vinegar, corn syrup, maple syrup, oil, honey, and dish soap.)
~ Racing Liquids - we had a race with 8 different liquids to see which one moves faster. Water, Vinegar and rubbing Alcohol tied, but what surprised us the most was the dish soap - it was slower than honey and corn syrup.
This upcoming week we will explore MIXING liquids! Stay tuned for pictures :)
September/October:

To conclude our science unit, students had an opportunity to choose an insect/bug of their choice. The insect/bug did not necessarily have to be found within the boundaries of Alberta. Once a bug was chosen, students had an opportunity to research about their bug. We used books from the library, iPads, and our previous knowledge.
Project requirements:
- be able to describe the bugs body parts
- be able to describe its habitat
- explain how the bug fits into the food chain (what does it eat, what eats it etc)
- build a 3D model of their bug including its habitat

This month we are learning about Small Flying and Crawling Animals. We have gone on a bug hunt, went on a virtual field trip to the UK to view a bee hive and the Queen Bee! We also had an afternoon of honey tasting - YUM.
Today we looked at different types of bug adaptations. We discussed camouflage and mouth adaptations. Just another fun day of learning in science class.
